The IKS Concept in South Africa was initiated over ten years ago, and was an initiative of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee (PC) on Arts, Culture, Language, Science and Technology. A partnership consisting of the Portfolio Committee, the Universities of Venda and the North, the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and other institutions was established to spearhead this initiative. Out of this initiative, the idea to iIKSSA was conceived around 1998 and in November 2002 iIKSSA Trust was established with the financial support of the Department of Arts and Culture and Department of Science and Technology.
